“Believe in yourself.” “Pick good friends.” “Work hard, be strategic.” “Find a mentor.” “Be wary of a boyfriend’s promises.”

These were the messages from guest speakers at Believe Club’s recent career day for senior girls. Club members from St. Mary’s Girls School and St. Peter’s Secondary School gathered for a three-hour session that inspired and motivated everyone, including school counselors, headmasters and head teachers.

“The career day session was unprecedented,” said one school official, asking for similar presentations to the entire student bodies next year. Another said, “I’ve worked at many schools but had never seen anything like what was organized by Believe Club auntie, Gloria Mubita.” And school counselors encouraged Auntie Gloria to increase club meetings from once a week to twice a week.”

To help celebrate the senior girls, GSGC provided each with a Certificate of Outstanding Achievement and a gift bag containing sanitary products, school supplies, and a “Yes I Can” journal and pen.

Not surprising, interest in joining the clubs skyrocketed. “No other organization has offered the emotional or material support that Global Sojourns Giving Circle.” said a school leader.

Gloria is connecting a woman physician who spoke that day with club alumnae who are in nursing school. The physician offered to be a support for club girls, and Gloria knew the nursing students could use some help with study and exam-taking techniques.

Gloria is looking ahead and wants to make the next Career Day even better; many girls have already volunteered to help. But for now, the girls’ common refrain was her satisfaction. “They believe in themselves,” Gloria said. “Now their voice is, ‘Yes, I can pass.’ ‘Yes, I can do it.’

“So thank you on behalf of the two schools,” she continued. “I will say it now: Yes we can!”
