On Menstrual Hygiene Day 2025, four young members of Believe Girls Club in Livingstone, Zambia, stood before their community and delivered a spoken word performance that was bold, honest, and unforgettable. With courage and clarity, they challenged the silence, shame, and stigma surrounding menstruation — speaking not just for themselves, but for girls everywhere who are too often left without support, dignity, or understanding. Their words moved the crowd to gasps and applause — and now, we invite you to experience it too. Watch the video below, and read the full poem that sparked a moment of reckoning and hope.
Ability can take you high
But it takes your character to remain on top
From this tenderizing land of work and joy
It is us, The Believe Girls Club, with a poem entitled “Menstrual Hygiene Day”
We won’t wait another day
We say it today and right away
During this day, for this is the way of the day
I know diamonds come from the dirt, and gold is made from fire
That’s how pure our bodies are
From this cycle comes a great story to tell
May 28th, a day to unite
Shining so bright, kissed by the morning light
In this poem let’s agree to disagree, or disagree to agree. Let’s talk for the voiceless girls.
They say education is the key, but what good a key
Where there no doors for the poor?
We dream dreams, because dreams are free, but reality has a fee
We are not alone, our periods are part of us
And we are worth more than gold
Remember, time is but a factor. Minds are but a symbol
Our community is quiet, that adults have become cowards.
Even if the data of this matter, that we utter shall fall to flutter
We the Believe Girls Club shall not conspire, but aspire to inspire this generation
What we need is an agenda that will propel us to surrender, to an exquisite splendor
With an aroma as sweet as lavender
Girl’s needs ignored, ignored minds of greatness
Great futures crushed, crushed minds of leaders
Leaders of tomorrow vanished, vanished into thin air
Minds slowly fade
Faded are ideas of the great. Every action has a reaction
Just like you have a voice to speak up for Menstrual Hygiene Day
For there is nothing about us, without us
Judgmental is my community, judged when I’m on my periods
Menstruation is a taboo, a shame, a disaster I was born with
So sad my voice is but noise, so sad my lips are but plastic, so sad my eyes are but bulbs
So sad my head is but a box
Through our cramps and back pains
We cannot cry, our tears are dry
In isolation, we get no consolation, only condemnation
Life is about choices. Even in the midst of many voices, only one is right
We shall keep our belts tight, and for Menstrual Hygiene Day
We shall fight!
