The Seeds of Change – Girls Time and Sisonke Boys Keep It Real

“I have never imagined an African man standing up for a girl child, fighting against gender inequality and abuse, especially knowing our cultural norms,” says Pamela from Girls Time Club.
With the help of GSGS, five members from Girls Time Club in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, visited Sisonke Boys Club, in Monde, a village not quite 15 miles outside Victoria Falls. This was the first visit done by the girls to such a club.
It was an honor to the entire club and a privilege to those who participated in the tour, getting to meet with the boys. Sisonke club is about equality, that is their push! They are fighting against girls and boys abuse and also fighting for gender equality.
The visit gave both the girls and boys a platform to exchange their thoughts, experiences and all they have acquired throughout the year in their clubs. Gender equality and gender roles seemed to be an interesting topic as they went on sharing and asking questions amongst themselves.
“It is indeed a pleasant surprise to have been visited by the girls at our Safe Space, it really means a lot to us as we are getting to know them better and also understand what we can do to make their lives better”, says Nqobile, a member of the boys club.
The visit meant so much to the Girls time Club at large, and also to Sisonke club, as it gave a platform to everyone to have a clear picture and also understand the problems and challenges in depth, which are faced in the society.
“The important part is that we have heard the cries of our sisters, our girls, as Sisonke, we pledge to continue raising the banner of girl empowerment, respect, love and above all stand in unity with the girls so as to create a peaceful community that says NO TO GIRL CHILD ABUSE”, said uncle Prosper, the mentor of the boys at Sisonke club.
It would be of great benefit to have such meet ups regularly, so that boys and girls could mingle and get know each other better, this could also create a balance automatically as they learn that they are equal and they deserve equal opportunities, respect and spread love amongst themselves. As they grow up in such a manner, we are bound to influence the whole community and definitely the whole world making it a better place eventually.
