Mentor Moment: Talent Muyambo on Leading by Example

Every mentor hopes to make a difference in the life of a young person. But over time, many discover that mentorship changes them too.
For Talent Muyambo, a mentor with the Sisonke Girls Club, walking alongside girls in her community has transformed the way she sees herself. It has taught her that leadership is not just about offering guidance—it's about becoming someone others can trust, learn from and believe in.
The Power of Encouragement
One young girl from Talent's club came to her feeling hopeless. Financial challenges at home had left her believing that staying in school was no longer possible.
Instead of accepting that this was the end of her education, Talent encouraged her to keep going.
"I encouraged her to stay in school, helped her see the value of education, and continued to support and motivate her during our mentorship sessions."
Months later, the girl returned with a smile.
"She told me that she had decided to continue with her studies and was working harder than before. She also said that the life skills and encouragement she received from the club had given her hope for a better future."
For Talent, that conversation reaffirmed something she has come to believe through mentoring.
“That moment reminded me why I mentor. It showed me that sometimes a few words of encouragement, guidance, and support can change the direction of a young person's life. Seeing her regain confidence and determination reinforced my belief that mentorship can transform lives and help young people overcome challenges.”
Becoming the Person They Look Up To
When Talent first became a mentor, she saw the many challenges facing girls in her community—teenage pregnancy, school dropouts, poverty, substance abuse and limited access to education. The problems felt overwhelming.
Today, she sees something different.
“Instead of focusing only on the challenges, I now see opportunities for growth and development. I have learned that when girls are given guidance, support, and life skills, they can overcome obstacles and build brighter futures for themselves and their families. Through mentoring, I have discovered that I can make a difference in the lives of young girls. Seeing them gain confidence, improve in their studies and make better life choices has helped me realize that I am a role model and an agent of change in my community."
But becoming a role model has also changed Talent herself.
Knowing that the girls are watching her has made her more intentional about the way she lives.
"The girls that I mentor, they look up to me. So I try by all means to do what is good so that they can copy."
She says mentoring has challenged her to grow alongside the young people she supports.
"It has really changed me a lot."
A Safe Space to Be Heard
For Talent, one of the greatest rewards of mentoring isn't found in achievements or recognition. It is knowing that a young person feels safe enough to come and share what they are carrying.
"It has been one of the most rewarding parts of my journey, just to see that you are a safe space to someone."
She treasures the trust that grows through those relationships.
"To see that someone can just come and talk to you openly is something that is very, very important."
Those moments remind her that mentorship is often less about having all the answers and more about being someone who is willing to listen.
Looking to the Future
Talent hopes the girls in her club leave with more than practical skills. She hopes they leave believing they can shape the future of their families and communities.
"I hope they carry patience, leadership, community service and the ability to make better choices and become agents of change in the community."
Because for Talent, mentorship is not only about helping girls overcome today's challenges. It is about preparing them to become tomorrow's leaders.
