Driving Transformation: Boys Club Alumnus Pays It Forward

At Global Sojourns Giving Circle, we believe that education is key to empowering girls and building stronger communities. Academic achievement plays a crucial role in unlocking opportunities, fostering leadership and addressing societal challenges.

In line with our commitment to support girls’ holistic development, we are pleased to highlight an inspiring story from Wayi Wayi Girls Club in Livingstone, Zambia, where a group of determined young women come together to support each other’s academic growth, with a bit of assistance. The nontraditional twist is the assistance comes from Edward, an alumn of the Wayi Wayi Boys Club. He and they are breaking barriers and paving the way for a brighter future.

Academic achievement is one of the fundamental principles that guide GSGC-supported clubs. We understand that education is not only a pathway to personal growth, but also a catalyst for positive change within communities. Mentor Sunga Mwila ofWayiWayi Girls Club in Livingstone, Zambia, articulates this beautifully:

WayiWayi Girls Clubrecognizes and embraces academic achievement. When Mentor Sunga Mwila discovered that 80 percent of girls were struggling with STEM subjects such as Math, Biology, Physics, and Chemistry, she took action. Together, she and the girls formed a study group, leveraging their collective strength and determination to overcome their challenges. Recognizing the potential in their network, they reached out for support. Edward, an accomplished alumnus of Way Way iBoys Club, volunteered his time to tutor the girls.

With Edward’s support, the study group has embarked on a journey of learning and growth, delving into math revisions and seeking clarity on complex concepts. They have committed to doing this before every weekly club meeting this quarter, sitting down at least 30 minutes to go over their revisions.Edward’s dedication and willingness to contribute exemplify the value of gender equality – boys for girls – and support for girls’ education in his community.

Wayi Wayi Girls Club members and their dedicated mentors exemplify resilience and empowerment. Through efforts such as this study group, they are overcoming academic hurdles and growing in confidence. Their commitment to academic excellence not only shapes their individual futures but lifts their entire community. Education provides everyone with expanded opportunities and opens doors to a world of possibilities.
