In the heart of Livingstone, Zambia, a determined and hardworking young woman named Chazipa has emerged as a beacon of inspiration. Born into a family facing financial challenges and burdened by traditional gender expectations, Chazipa defied the odds. As a member of the Wayi Wayi Girls Club (now Sungomukoshi Girls Club) since 2018, she became the embodiment of the transformative power of committed mentorship.

Part of a family of five siblings, four girls and one boy, rooted in a mindset that prioritizes traditional roles over education, Chazipa witnessed her elder sister’s immediate marriage after finishing secondary school and her brother’s abandonment of formal education. Despite these challenges, Chazipa harbored a dream of breaking this cycle and becoming a guiding light for her younger sisters.

Sunga Mwila, her mentor, reflects on Chazipa’s journey: “She is encouraged by elder artists she has met at Wayi Wayi Creatives Village, who have coupled their artistic skills with education and are doing far much better than her father, who is also artistic but has no academic qualification.”

Chazipa’s path to higher education started with academic excellence in high school and active participation in extracurricular activities. Seeking guidance and support from Mentors, she navigated the challenging college application process and secured a coveted spot at Evelyn Hone College of Applied Arts.
