How our funding makes a difference

The GS Giving Circle has partnered with Ray of Hope since 2008.  Our funding has helped to:

  • provide individual micro-loans and training
  • establish a community library
  • assist with capacity building and overhead
  • provide a group micro-loan
  • provide educational workshops for teachers and girls

In 2008 we contributed $9,740 for micro-loans and training to 30 caregivers of vulnerable children, overhead (computer, furniture, rent), training of Tusa Munyandi leaders (computer) and members (small business training).  We loved being able to help a more experienced organization provide capacity building assistance to a nascent one.)

Kuyuma group watering garden; RH; 8.10In 2009 Ray of Hope asked for assistance with a group loan to economically vulnerable community members.  Our donation of $4,000 went to their community garden.  The garden became very popular with elephants and after replanting three times, the elephants one out.  Members of the GS Giving Circle visited the gardens and were amazed by all of the huge footprints found throughout the garden!  While the project did not work out in the long-term, the funding helped group members care for their families for a time and much was learned from the project.

In 2010 we collaborated with Ray of Hope to give specific focus to assisting girls.  Ray of Hope developed a  “Career Day” program that focuses on sensitizing teachers, training girls (14-17 years) and providing mentors for the girls.

From what we’ve seen so far, it has been immensely successful and we look forward to expanding this program with Ray of Hope.
