Challenges in the townships

Townships are urban living areas.  During the apartheid years, non-whites were evicted from “white only” areas and forced into living in townships.  Challenges in the townships are multiple: poverty and underemployment, lack of proper infrastructure for clean water and evacuation of household waste, overcrowding and poor access to schools and health care. Alcoholism, drugs and teen pregnancy are common in these areas due to the high rate of unemployment.
